The steamer *William E. Corey* was named for William Ellis Corey, who led the United States Steel Corporation after its formation in 1901. Around the time this picture was made, steel companies were building large bulk freighters to carry iron ore from Lake Superior ports to mills on the lower lakes, and vessels like this one reshaped Great Lakes shipping. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed many lake vessels and harbors, captured the ship on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate negative, a large format that recorded fine detail in the hull and rigging.
