This view shows the steamer *Sir William Fairbairn*, a ship named for the 19th-century British engineer whose work on iron hulls, bridges, and machinery helped shape modern shipbuilding. The picture was made as a large 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, which gave the Detroit Publishing Company sharp detail for its prints. The company photographed American and Canadian scenery, towns, and transportation in the years before 1915, and vessels like this one were a common subject, reflecting how central steamships were to moving freight and passengers across the Great Lakes and inland waterways.
