The side-wheeler *Hendrick Hudson* takes its name from Henry Hudson, the English navigator whose 1609 voyage opened the river to European trade. This c1907 glass plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company shows the paddlewheel steamer in its working setting on the Hudson, which carried day and overnight passengers between New York City and Albany. Excursion boats like this one were a popular way to see the river's bluffs and estates in the early 1900s. The 8 x 10 inch negative preserves the vessel's form and the river scene in fine detail.
