This glass-plate negative documents the steamer *Athabasca* around 1905, a vessel identified only by its name in the record, so its route and career are not recorded here. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the picture, produced large-format views of ships, towns, and landscapes for sale across the United States in the early 1900s. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative offers far more detail than a small print, and its survival is due to a 1949 gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado. Around 1905, steamboats still carried passengers and freight on many rivers and lakes before railroads and roads took over much of that work.
