The subject is a steamship named *Eastern States*, a vessel whose name suggests a passenger or cargo boat working the waterways of the early twentieth century. Steamers like this were a staple of Detroit Publishing Company photography, which documented American rivers, harbors, and transportation routes around 1900. This is a large-format 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, and its record places it in 1901 or 1902, based on comparison with negatives bearing similar numbers. The picture reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
