The Whaleback steamer *A.D. Thompson* stands out for its rounded, cigar-shaped hull, which sat low in the water. Alexander McDougall designed whalebacks so that waves would roll over the curved deck instead of breaking against a flat bow, and the type was built in the Duluth-Superior area for Great Lakes cargo work. This glass negative, dated around 1905, comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American towns, scenery and industry. The catalog's "[sic]" notes that the ship's name was recorded in a form that may not match its usual spelling.
