A Canadian maple leaf painted on the smokestack identifies the steamer Strathcona as a Canadian vessel, a detail that sets this view apart from the many American river and lake boats in the collection. The Detroit Publishing Company, which worked from Detroit and sold views of both American and Canadian scenery, made this negative sometime between 1905 and 1915, when steamers were central to passenger travel and freight across the Great Lakes region. The 8 by 10 inch glass plate later came to the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
