A freighter named the J.T. Hutchinson is the subject here, photographed at the locks in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, with snow on the ground and around the vessel. The Soo Locks, opened in 1855 to bypass the rapids of the St. Marys River, carried a large share of the iron ore and grain moving between Lake Superior and the lower lakes, so the locks were a busy point for passing ships. The Detroit Publishing Company produced many views like this one for sale as prints and postcards in the early 1900s, so the picture also shows how the commercial waterway was presented to the public at the time.
