Wyandotte, Michigan, a river town south of Detroit, is the setting for this view of the launch of the steamship *Sir Thomas Shaughnessy*. The ship bore the name of the president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, a company whose lake and ocean vessels tied its rail network to shipping routes. Around 1906, launches like this drew crowds of workers and townspeople to the riverfront, and the Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers to record such industrial scenes. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative preserves the moment the hull entered the water.
