Looking forward along the deck of the German sailing ship R.C. Rickmers, this view shows the long working deck and the rigging that a large iron or steel sailing vessel of the period depended on. The ship belonged to the Rickmers shipping firm of Bremerhaven, a family business that operated sailing vessels in the era before steam dominated long-distance cargo. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, produced views of ships, ports, and cities across North America and beyond, and the date given here, about 1906, is an estimate. The negative's Colorado provenance, a 1949 gift to the State Historical Society, is noted in its record.
