Ormond Beach, on Florida's Atlantic coast, was already a winter resort when this 8 x 10 inch glass negative was made, and its wide, hard-packed sand drew visitors who rode bicycles and tricycles along the shore as well as sailing. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced scenic views of American places for travel markets around the turn of the twentieth century, issued pictures like this one. The beach later became famous for early automobile speed trials, so the same firm sand that carried wheeled recreation would soon host racing cars. Worth noticing is the easy mix of leisure activities on an open beach in this period.
