This view zooms in on the midsection of the steamer S.S. Dakota, the area between the bow and stern where cargo, machinery, and passenger spaces were typically concentrated. The photograph is a glass negative made around 1905 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American towns, rivers, and transportation for commercial sale. The large 8 by 10 inch format captured fine detail in rigging, railings, and deck fittings, which is why such negatives were valued for both reproduction and later study. The gift of the negative to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 helps explain how this record reached the Library of Congress.
