The title points to the Cadillac name, which the Cadillac Motor Company adopted in 1902 from Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the French officer who founded Detroit in 1701. The Detroit Publishing Company, based in that city, produced many views of American towns, landmarks and industry, and this 8 x 10 inch glass negative is one of them. The record does not say exactly what it shows, so it is best read as a document of early Detroit during the years when the city was becoming a center of automobile manufacturing. Glass negatives like this one served as the working originals from which prints and postcards were made.
