This glass negative shows a Cadillac automobile "on the stocks," a term that suggests the car was still being assembled when it was photographed. The Cadillac name was not yet in use around 1901. The company took it in 1902, honoring Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, the French officer who founded Detroit in 1701. Detroit Publishing Company photographed American cities and industries, and its images documented the region's growing automobile trade. The plate reached the Library of Congress in 1949 as a gift through the State Historical Society of Colorado.
