Few things on a late-nineteenth-century warship were as specialized as the torpedo tube, the launching mechanism that gave these small, fast vessels their offensive punch. This glass negative shows the interior of such a vessel, with the machinery and fittings needed to aim and fire a torpedo close to the enemy. The Library of Congress dates it only to between 1882 and 1901, based on how its catalog number compares with those in the Detroit Publishing Company's 1901 listing. The company was better known for its travel views and color prints, so its record of naval equipment is an unusual glimpse into the technology of the period.
