This glass negative looks down into the cramped interior between decks of a destroyer, a term the catalog pairs with "torpedo boat" in its subject headings. Warships of the late 1800s were still taking shape, and navies were experimenting with fast, lightly armed craft built to carry torpedoes against larger ships. The name "destroyer" was applied more loosely then than it is today. The date is an estimate drawn from the numbering in the Detroit Publishing Company's 1901 catalog, so the picture most likely dates from between 1882 and 1901.
