The locomotive in this view is *The General*, the engine that Union raiders seized at Big Shanty, Georgia, in April 1862 in the episode known as the Great Locomotive Chase. Its later career as a preserved war relic brought it to exhibition in several Southern cities, and this interior view of Chattanooga's Union Station shows it displayed indoors rather than in service. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the photograph around 1907, was known for documenting American towns, rail lines and tourist destinations, and its 8 x 10 inch glass negatives captured fine detail. Look closely at the engine's boiler, cab and rail fittings, which show how a wartime locomotive looked when it had become a public attraction.
