Pontiac, Illinois, is the setting, and the record notes a water tank or tower in the scene, a feature that tied a depot like this to steam locomotives that needed regular water. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, made between 1900 and 1905 by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely recording towns, rail lines and scenery across the country. Railroad stations were a favorite subject for the firm, since trains linked small Midwestern communities to larger markets and cities. Worth noticing is how the depot combined passenger service with the working machinery of steam travel.
