Chenoa, a small town in McLean County, Illinois, grew up around the railroad, and this view of its station shows the building that linked the community to the wider rail network. When this 8 x 10 inch glass-plate negative was made, sometime between 1900 and 1905, depots like this one were often a town's main contact with the outside world, handling travelers, mail and freight. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country to document towns, rivers and rail lines, made the image, and its large-format plates from this period offer a detailed record of ordinary American places.
