Railroad track in Normal, Illinois, is the subject here: a rail line being straightened, caught on a glass dry plate negative from the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, based in Detroit, produced thousands of such views between roughly 1890 and the 1920s, often marketed as hand-colored prints of American towns, landscapes and industry. Normal, a town next to Bloomington, grew up around its rail connections, and work crews adjusting track like this one kept those lines running safely and on schedule. The 8 x 10 inch plate and its catalog number, 042299, make it a useful record of everyday railroad maintenance from that period.
