Dwight, a village in Livingston County, Illinois, sits along the Chicago and Alton Railroad's line, and this view records the station that served the town around 1900 to 1905. The picture was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a large format that gave the Detroit Publishing Company the sharp detail it wanted for its wide catalog of American scenes. Railroad depots like this one were busy hubs in small Midwestern towns, handling passengers, mail and freight, and the company often photographed them as part of its record of rail travel.
