Bloomington, Illinois, was an active railroad town in the early 1900s, and this view records a stretch of track in its yards that was about to be straightened. Maintenance like this was routine on lines that carried heavy freight and passenger traffic, and it kept rails and roadbeds safe for trains. The picture is a glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, railways and scenery during this period. Its 8 by 10 inch format captures the rails and ties in fine detail.
