This 8 x 10 inch glass negative is a studio record of rugs, made under the title "Charles Scribner's & Sons," which points to the New York publishing house as the intended client. The catalog note suggests it may have been produced for a Scribner's book, so the rugs were probably photographed to be reproduced as printed illustrations. Commercial work like this was a regular part of the Detroit Publishing Company's business in the years before 1910, when the firm sold photographs and photochrom prints. The plate shows how much care went into making an object look clear enough to reproduce in print.
