A steamship bearing the name of Charles R. Van Hise, the geologist who served as president of the University of Wisconsin from 1903 until his death in 1918, is the subject of this glass-plate view. The Detroit Publishing Company, based in Michigan, sold photographs of ships, rail lines, resorts and towns across the country, and its views are valued for their detail. Made on an 8 by 10 inch dry plate sometime between 1900 and 1910, the negative dates from a period when Great Lakes freighters were growing larger and hauling more iron ore and coal.
