The residence in this 1904 view belonged to Dr. Charles U. Shepard and stood in the Pinehurst section of Summerville, South Carolina, a town just northwest of Charleston. Summerville drew winter visitors from the North in the late 1800s and early 1900s, who came for its mild climate and the resinous air of its pine woods, which many believed was good for the lungs. Detroit Publishing Company photographers documented such resort houses and their grounds for sale to travelers and publishers, so the picture offers a useful record of how a wealthy seasonal household presented itself at the time.
