A broken topmast is what sets this view of the schooner *Rose Dorothea* apart from other pictures of the 1907 contest. The Fishermen's Race for the Lipton Cup pitted fishing schooners against one another in Massachusetts Bay, with the trophy donated by the Scottish tea merchant Thomas Lipton, a well-known yachtsman. These working vessels were built for heavy seas and rigged for speed, so a damaged rig was a real hazard during a hard race. The glass negative is possibly the work of Nathaniel Livermore Stebbins, a Massachusetts photographer whose images were distributed by the Detroit Publishing Company.
