Nantasket Beach, on the Massachusetts coast south of Boston, is the setting here, and the title, "Sea shore, first lessons," suggests a scene of children and adults learning to swim in the surf. The catalog places it at Nantasket by comparison with negatives of similar numbers, so the location is a reasonable inference rather than something written on the plate itself. In the early 1900s Nantasket was a busy seaside resort, reached by steamboat and railway from Boston, and crowds of day-trippers came for bathing and boardwalk amusements. The image is an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting American places and everyday life around the turn of the century.
