A shoreline road curves past the water at Spofford Lake in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, a small town in the southwestern part of the state. The Detroit Publishing Company made this view around 1907, when its photographers traveled widely with large-format cameras and sold scenic views to tourists and publishers. Lakeside spots like this one drew summer visitors from nearby cities, and roads such as this one brought them down to the water. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative preserves fine detail in the trees and along the shore.
