Stearn's Cove, a sheltered inlet on Lake Spofford in southwestern New Hampshire, is the subject of this 8 x 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between 1900 and 1905. The company's photographers traveled widely to document scenic spots and resort towns across the country, and its views were sold as postcards and prints to a public eager to see distant landscapes. A lake setting like this one reflects the period's growing taste for summer recreation, when boating, fishing, and lakeside retreats drew city families into the New England countryside. The glass negative itself, a gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, preserves the sharp detail of an early twentieth-century view.
