The rows of identical headstones in this view belong to the Chattanooga National Cemetery, one of the first national cemeteries established after the Civil War. Its grounds hold the remains of Union soldiers who died in the battles around Chattanooga in 1863 and in the years of occupation that followed, and many of the markers here read simply "Unknown," a reminder of how many of the dead could not be identified. The photograph was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-format views of American landmarks, and the glass negative dates to about 1900. Its clean, regular lines of stones show the orderly design that national cemeteries were laid out to achieve.
