The Necropolis Cristóbal Colón in Havana is known for its crowded marble mausoleums, angel figures, and family vaults, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative captures that dense, sculptural landscape. The cemetery was laid out in the 1870s under Spanish colonial rule, and its monuments reflected the wealth of Havana's merchant and planter families. The view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that produced large-scale travel views around 1900, and it was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado.
