A laborer stands among bones in the Necropolis Cristóbal Colón, the large burial ground in Havana, in this glass-plate negative from roughly 1895 to 1910. The cemetery opened in 1871 and grew into one of the city's best-known sites, with elaborate family vaults and mausoleums lining its avenues. Its photographer belonged to the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold views of places around the world in the years around 1900. The picture shows the unglamorous, physical side of maintaining a crowded cemetery in a tropical climate.
