From the summit of Lookout Mountain, the Tennessee River bends in a wide loop called Moccasin Bend, and this panorama joins three 8 by 10 inch glass negatives to capture the whole curve. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced scenic views for tourists and railroad promotion in the early 1900s, made the set around 1902. The area had been a battleground during the Chattanooga campaign of 1863, when Union and Confederate forces fought on and around Lookout Mountain, and by the turn of the century the mountain was drawing visitors who came to see the valley and river below.
