Mountain Park, on the slopes of Mount Tom in western Massachusetts, was a trolley-served resort that drew day-trippers from the nearby mill city of Holyoke and the Pioneer Valley. This view looks out over the park and the river country below, with the Connecticut River valley as one of the features the photographer chose to frame. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative, sold views like it to tourists and collectors in the early 1900s, when railroads and trolleys were promoting scenic destinations. The record notes that this is only the center section of a larger panorama, so the full scene was wider than what survives here.
