Taken from the summit of Mount Tom, this pair of glass negatives looks down over Easthampton and the farmland and river country of western Massachusetts. Mount Tom rises in the Holyoke Range above Holyoke, and in the early 1900s a railway carried visitors up its slopes to enjoy the open views. The two plates were meant to be joined into one wide panorama, a format the Detroit Publishing Company used to present scenery as sweeping vistas. The firm, based in Detroit, sold large numbers of such views to travelers and collectors until its business declined in the 1920s.
