This picture belongs to a set of three glass negatives, each 8 by 10 inches, that the catalog describes as a sequence to be read left to right, so it was likely meant to be seen as part of a single view of Lowell, Massachusetts. The city grew into one of the largest textile manufacturing centers in the country during the 19th century, powered by the Merrimack River and its canal system. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made views of American towns and landscapes around 1900 to 1910, sold such images to travelers, publishers and businesses. Its scenes of working cities like Lowell offer a record of the industrial streetscape of that period.
