Only the left half of this two-part panorama survives in the collection, so the view stops short of the ships at anchor in Sandy Bay off Rockport, Massachusetts. The North Atlantic Squadron of the U.S. Navy visited Cape Ann in these years, and its warships in the sheltered bay drew attention from local residents and photographers. The picture is an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format views of American places and events were widely sold in the decade before 1910. Its catalog number places it within that company's commercial output.
