The Hoosac Range rises above North Adams, Massachusetts, a mill town in the northern Berkshires, in this view. The collection holds three glass negatives from what was originally one section of a four-part panorama, and the right-hand part is not preserved here. North Adams grew around textile and shoe manufacturing along the Hoosac River, and the nearby Hoosac Tunnel, bored through the same mountains for the railroad and finished in 1875, was a major engineering project of its day. The Detroit Publishing Company made views like this one around 1900 to 1910 to document American towns and landscapes.
