Southwick Hall served the Lowell Textile School, part of a mill city that for generations was a center of American cloth making along the Merrimack River. When this view was made around 1908, Lowell's economy still depended heavily on its textile mills, and vocational schools like this one prepared students for work in the industry. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for photographing towns, buildings and scenery across the country. The negative later came to the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
