This view centers on the grave of Mary Lyon, whose monument on the South Hadley campus bears an inscription naming her as founder of Mount Holyoke Seminary. Lyon opened the school in 1837 as one of the earliest institutions in the United States to offer women a rigorous, long-term course of study, and she led it until her death in 1849. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass-plate negative around 1908, when the college was drawing attention as a pioneer of women's education. The iron fence around the grave, one of the features noted in the record, shows how the site was set apart within the campus.
