Mount Holyoke College's observatory in South Hadley, Massachusetts, is the subject of this glass-plate negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between 1900 and 1910. The company was a commercial photographic firm that produced large numbers of views of American towns, campuses and landmarks, often for sale as postcards and souvenir prints. Mount Holyoke, founded in 1837 as a women's seminary and later one of the earliest colleges for women in the country, had by this time built up its science teaching, and an observatory like this one reflected that emphasis. The 8 x 10 inch format was typical of the company's work and gives the image a good deal of detail in the building and its setting.
