The Beta Theta Pi house at Amherst College is the subject here, a fraternity clubhouse photographed on a glass plate negative sometime between 1900 and 1910. Detroit Publishing Company, which made tens of thousands of views of American towns, campuses and landmarks for sale as postcards and prints, produced the image, and the negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Fraternity houses like this one were central to student social life at New England colleges in the early 1900s, and the large 8 x 10 inch plate records the building's architecture in fine detail.
