The Phi Delta Theta house at Amherst College is the subject here, a fraternity clubhouse on the campus in Amherst, Massachusetts, caught on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative made sometime between 1900 and 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, which ran a large commercial photography business and produced many views of American towns, campuses and landmarks in those years, catalogued it under a numbered series. Fraternity houses like this one were central to student social life at New England colleges by the turn of the century, serving as both residences and gathering places. The negative passed through the State Historical Society of Colorado before reaching the Library of Congress in 1949.
