The Delta Kappa Epsilon house at Amherst College is the subject here, a fraternity clubhouse on the campus in Amherst, Massachusetts, recorded as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made around 1908. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of American towns, campuses and scenery in the early twentieth century, produced such images to be sold as color-tinted prints, and this plate is one of the company's series. Fraternity houses like this one were central to student social life at New England colleges of the period, so the picture offers a glimpse of the built setting of undergraduate life before the First World War.
