The Theta Delta Chi house at Amherst College is the subject here, a fraternity clubhouse on the college grounds in Amherst, Massachusetts. The glass-plate negative was made between 1900 and 1910 by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-format views of American towns, campuses and landscapes, many of them later hand-colored for sale as postcards and prints. Fraternity houses like this one were central to student social life at New England colleges during these years, and photographs of them show how such clubhouses were built and presented to the wider public. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
