Blast furnaces line the west bank of the Maumee River in Toledo, Ohio, where the river meets Lake Erie and iron ore and coal could be moved by water. Toledo became an important center for iron smelting in the early twentieth century, and the river's shipping access made the riverfront a natural site for such works. The picture survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, the large-format medium the Detroit Publishing Company used for its commercial views of American cities, industries and landscapes. Its clear detail of the furnaces and their surroundings makes it useful for studying how heavy industry shaped the Ohio shoreline in the years before 1920.
