The Red Cedar River, pictured here in a glass-plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, runs through Lansing, Michigan, the state capital, and joins the Grand River within the city. The company's photographers traveled widely in the years before 1920, documenting towns, rivers and scenery for promotional and commercial sale, and this view belongs to that effort. Glass negatives of this size, 8 by 10 inches, were valued for their sharp detail, which lets viewers study the riverbanks and built surroundings closely today. The record notes that the negative was a gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949, a reminder of how these plates moved between collections over time.
