The Old Red Mill on Cedar Creek, near the Natural Bridge in Rockbridge County, Virginia, survives here as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative. The Detroit Publishing Company produced views like this from about 1900 to 1915 to sell to travelers, hotels and railroads promoting scenic destinations, and the Natural Bridge, a limestone arch long popular with tourists, was a natural subject. Mills along small streams were common rural landmarks of the period, and this one shows a working building at the edge of a well-known resort region. The negative reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
