Tucked into the gorge above the natural limestone span, this view of the glen shows Cedar Creek cutting through rough rock in the Natural Bridge area of Rockbridge County, Virginia. The arch, roughly 215 feet high, was once owned by Thomas Jefferson, who described it in his *Notes on the State of Virginia*. The Detroit Publishing Company made views like this on large glass negatives to promote travel, so the picture shows how scenic places like this one were marketed to tourists in the years before 1915.
