Chickamauga Creek runs quietly past Reed's bridge in this view, a rural crossing in northwest Georgia that the Detroit Publishing Company recorded in glass-plate negative sometime between 1900 and 1915. The creek's name is tied to the Battle of Chickamauga, fought in September 1863 nearby, one of the bloodiest engagements of the Civil War in the Western Theater. By the early twentieth century the surrounding land had become part of a national military park, and photographers like those working for Detroit Publishing traveled widely to document such landmarks for tourists and postcard buyers. The image is a useful record of how the battlefield's waterways looked before the park's later development.
